Shining Inheritance starring Han Hyo Joo and Lee Seung Ki

Shining Inheritance, also known as Brilliant Legacy, is perhaps THE smash hit of 2009 so far. This quintessential Cinderella story pulled in ratings even higher than Boys Over Flowers and crossed the much-desired 40% mark in ratings. Headed by rookie actor Lee Seung Ki, formerly best known as a pop singer, it launched him to instant stardom, while further solidifying female lead Han Hyo Joo (Iljimae, Spring Waltz) as one of Korea's foremost young actresses today. Well-acted, written, and directed, Shining Inheritance is a great example of what can happen when Kdrama conventions are done right.

Go Eun Sung (Han Hyo Joo) has always had an easy life. The daughter of a wealthy, adoring father, she is encouraged to pursue her dreams and goes abroad to study. The only cloud on her horizon is the fact that her much-loved little brother is autistic. But in a single night she loses her entire world.

When her father suddenly dies under mysterious circumstances, the family discovers that his company has crashed and he left behind a huge number of debts. Her stepmother promptly throws her and her brother out of the house in favor of her own daughter, Seung Mi (Moon Chae Won).

Homeless and penniless, Eun Sung takes a job as a waitress at a night club to support herself and her brother, only to have her brother Eun-woo disappear one day. Eun Sung has hit rock bottom. Her fortunes turn, however, when she takes in an amnesiac old woman she finds at the bottom of some stairs after a fall. When the old woman recovers her memory, she turns out to be Jang Sook Ja, the wealthy CEO of a large food company.

Sook Ja takes Eun Sung in and gives her a job at her company, where she clashes constantly with Sun Woo Hwan (Lee Seung Ki), Sook Ja's spoiled grandson (and heir to the company). Eun Sung's sunny disposition and hardworking principles quickly win everyone over, however, and even begin to thaw the heart of selfish Hwan. What Eun Sung doesn't know is that her stepsister Seung Mi and Hwan are childhood friends, and that her evil stepmother is determined to have Seung Mi marry Hwan...

This drama had me sobbing by the middle of the first episode. I have an Autistic son and could not stop crying so I had to stop by episode 11 and skip to the end.

although like many k-dramas it was a slow start to introduce all the characters, it just kept getting better and better. what a complicated intertwining of characters! the cast was excellent. each played their roles very well. loved the grandmother but wanted to slap seong-mi's mother so many times - that's how well they played the characters and how well the story was written. the drama also conveyed great life principles to live by and i loved seeing the changes in many of the characters. i usually don't watch dramas with over 20 episodes but this is definitely worth it, up until the very end.

I don't know how they did it, but I found myself rooting for Hwan at some point in this drama. He completely redeemed himself; the effort he put into showing his love for Eun Sung and his grandmother completely won me over. Great acting all around...the good guys are really good and the bad guys are despicable. Sung Hee's malice was too much for me to take at times, but it heightened the stakes and added depth to this drama. Like other solid K-dramas, you can expect a lot of great one-liners and insights into the human condition/what motivates people. Although there are truly heartbreaking moments, this is ultimately a feel-good drama, unlike others that ruin an otherwise good plot by a depressing ending. Overall, a 5/5 rating for an unforgettable story. Watch this!!

Though I didn't really like the main actor - he played his part quite well. Overall this was an amazingly well done show with intense drama and emotion that held my interest to the end.

SPOILERS : I love how awhile watching this I've also left with a good lesson about life. American shows rarely show the struggles people have to go through just to make it day by day. Money IS scary. But in the end it is the love of your family, friends and the endurance to work hard to get what you want in life, truly can make you happy.Lets not forget that the love/hate relationship between hwan and eung sung took this drama to the next level ;) Also, the only person I've truly felt bad for was Seung Mi. The last two episodes made me bawl because of her cause of the way she had to finally learn to let go and move on. Which is pretty much one of the hardest things to do a human being can endure. Some people who watched this might've wanted Eung sung to end up with Joon sae and ask the question "why can't the good guy end up with the girl?" well here's the answer, it would be just too plain BORING. And also, Joon sae seemed nice and all but more like a "nice stalker" haha :)
